"Returning from Aachen I drove through Malmedy in eastern Belgium, an area that Hitler’s Reich had early claimed. Looking down on the valley near Monschau I saw a pillbox surmounted by a windblown Nazi flag. On the advice of an artillery officer I altered my return route.
