I met Father MacDonald shortly before his death to present my idea for the Malmedy piece. I had sketched out my idea of a war table suggesting military movements and the Belgian flag. He liked the idea and soon produced two maps from his collection for me to work with. Thereafter, I always felt his influence as the piece evolved—and to this day, I can clearly recall his soft-spoken intelligence and his kind manner. I feel honored to have participated in this project.
