Maastricht is not by the ocean, but Fred’s description of war cemeteries inevitably brings to mind the beaches of Normandy and the rows of graves after D-Day. Fred had collected eleven shards in Maastricht, all light-yellow glass. The watercolor-like treatment in this panel is meant to suggest impermanence, as well as the calm after the storm. The shards are lined up as gravestones on the dune—individual markers for specific fallen soldiers, and echoes of an ancient order of standing stones.
