I was immediately drawn to the image of Saint Bartholomew. Bartholomew is the patron saint of those who live near waterways, and Frankfurt Cathedral, like most cathedrals, was built next to a river. During the war, the patron saint protected the church—which still stands today—just as the church safeguards the relics of the saint.

In this piece, Saint Bartholomew is also the protector of the shards. He is depicted opening his robe to reveal them to us.
